Expert Advice to Help Your Teen Make (and Keep!) New Year’s Resolutions

New Year’s resolutions 2017. They’re ambitious, yet intimidating; full of hope, yet all too easily forgotten. And for teens, they’re just plain overwhelming.

“While balanced perspective can be challenging for adults, it is often daunting for teenagers. Impulsivity reigns supreme during adolescence – often limiting our aspirations,” says psychotherapist and Mental Gym founder, Bill Benson, who advises parents on how to approach the subject of New Year’s resolutions with teens.

So how can parents help their teens make lasting New Year’s resolutions? We asked mothers, fathers, family therapists, and parenting experts to contribute their top tips. Their answers may surprise you…

Parents help teens new year's resolutions

1. Set feasible goals.

Instead of brainstorming grandiose life makeovers with your teen, focus on smaller, more actionable items. Varda Meyers Epstein, Kars4Kids writer and mother-of-12, suggests choosing ten little things and concentrating on those, like laying out school clothes the night before or dedicating ten minutes in the morning to a nutritious breakfast. “Any goal that is ‘can-do’ is appropriate for a teen,” Meyers Epstein says, “They already know they can succeed with them, and it gets them moving forward in a proactive, positive way.”

2. Practice “accepting,” not “expecting.”

“Support your kid’s aspirations by ‘accepting’ rather than ‘expecting,’” says Benson, “Kindly step outside of your own boxed perspective when listening to your child’s hopes, dreams, desires, and goals – you just may learn something by considering the fresh perspective of a developing mind.”

As a way to advance this suggestion into practice, try actively listening to your teen’s New Year’s resolutions, then repackage and repeat them back to your teen, before tweaking them with your own suggestions. Doing so will make your teen feel heard and will create a safe space to further conversation.

3. Don’t call them “resolutions.”

“We don’t make New Year’s resolutions,” states Homeschool Base editor, Sarah Tippett, “we set goals and plan! Of course they’re still New Year’s resolution[s], but we approach things very differently.”

So what’s Tippett’s key to helping her teens make and keep these aspirations? “Make the goals very specific and formulate a plan or a checklist of items that need to be done to achieve these goals.”

4. Set goals as a family.

Renaming New Year’s resolutions isn’t the only way Tippett helps her teens achieve their New Year’s goals. “We also set goals as a family,” Tippett states, claiming accountability as the driving force, “The best way to achieve a goal is to tell everyone you know.” Following Tippett’s advice, try encouraging your teen to keep their sibling updated on their goal to read more. As a parent, follow up with your teen by asking questions or provoking discussion around their resolution throughout the year. Set goals as a family (like going on more walks or making sure there’s always something green on the dinner table), and make it a fun challenge to accomplish them together!

5. Make it personal.

“When your goal involves people who are external factors you can’t control, it will not end well,” Tippett warns. Just as there are many good ways to help your teen make New Year’s Resolutions, there are also many avenues to avoid as well. Tippett’s own child attempted to set a New Year’s resolution that involved improving the relationship between himself and a co-worker. “You can’t expect anyone else to ‘go along’ with your resolution,” Tippett cautions, “Although my teen tried to do a great job, the co-worker was unresponsive.”

6. Write it down.

“I like to tell my kids to write down 10 things they can do to improve their lives — in even a very small way — and to work through that list,” says Meyers Epstein. Other parents agree: “Write it down on a piece of paper or tell your teen to put it in their phone,” says Parenting Expert, Cherie Corso, “Every day, your teen will look at that resolution. By seeing it, he or she will remember to take actions towards that goal.”

So now that you know how to make New Year’s resolutions, what types of goals should you help your teens set? As test prep experts, it would be downright irresponsible of us not to advocate for resolutions that can help your teen achieve their future college goals. While you’re planning 2017 resolutions with your teen, include feasible goals to help them improve their ACT scores; like following a personalized ACT study plan or committing to raising their score by 10 points with these easy tips. In addition, our experts came up with a few additional suggestions (in addition to the ones above) that implement their advice, including:

  • making a point to eat healthier at dinner
  • developing a conflict management system to avoid exhaustive feuds with siblings
  • flossing daily

Do you feel like your going to explode? Election Anxiety, job, kids? Your not alone, tips to help you NOW!!

Election Anxiety, feel out of balance, do you need to calm down, sleep better?

IMG_8274Do you ever feel like your going to explode? One of the biggest problem facing people  and families today is stress and the feeling that they are never going to catch up, always running to the next event, always a email or text to answer or a fire to put out, or worried world events such as the election. In order to manage many high level people are seeking alternative ways to manage the unbalance in their lives, they want to reduce stress, feel happier without taking medication, without seeing a "shrink". The feeling of being on call all the time and under constant attack does impacts your health and effectiveness in doing your job. Business  are helping employees  taking action implementing new methods in the workplace helping lower sick days and increasing wellness and productivity. Time tested methods from around the world are being used in homes and the  work place.  People are seeing and seeing the  great results. More and more families and businesses are looking for help. People want to feel better and don't want to take medication, they don't want to have to drink alcohol to relax. People want to feel good about themselves and work in a positive space. Its hard in the over stimulated world we live in to find peace, that is why I teach people to find it in their bodies. I see clients in NYC and at Nicholas Day Spa and Salon | Pelham NY 914 • 738 • 3838nicholasdayspa.com/

I have developed a method that can help restore and align the physical and emotional balance through Chakras. I have over 20 years of experience with Reiki and energy healing, Chakras and card reading and helping people move to a higher level. When your in balance you’re stronger and more resilient to stress and better at your job. The better you feel, the better equipped you’will be to manage work, people and stress without becoming overwhelmed, the more successful you will feel and it will reflect in your performance. When you feel happier and at peace the energy is picked up by people you work with. When the energy is good in a office productivity goes up. When productivity is up, people make more money, feel more in control of their lives and everyone benefits. Chakras are energy centers, or portals in the human energy field. Located along the central channel of the body from the base of the spine to the top of the head, they are conceived of as whirling, wheel-like vortices through which universal/cosmic energy flows into and out of a person. Some of my clients even have salt lamps on their desk to absorb negative energy. I often distribute crystals that are kept in the office or carried in a brief case. "what the hell I keep one in my bra". Can't hurt will only help says one of my multi million dollar real estate clients.

Do you have election anxiety? I think we all do, we are getting more information then we can process. I feel for Mr. Trump, I gave Donald Trump a quartz crystal for good energy when I saw him in NYC at Trump Tower. He has good energy so much energy coming at him, its proof that he can survive and when elected will be one of our greatest presidents.

Many people on are feeling sad and depressed and overwhelmed because the energy flow is off, even looking down at a computer and phone results in slumped over with your neck and shoulders curved forward and head looking down. Its just not a natural position and manifests in blocked energy flow. Resulting in headaches, eye strain and loss of creativity and being open to new ideas. Many people are stuck, stuck because the energy is not flowing in their bodies, stuck because they need to get out of the mind and in the body. I help shift the energy, its as simple as that.IMG_8276

The relationship between our mind and body runs both ways, meaning our mind influences the way our body reacts, but the form of our body also triggers our mind.

Taking care of yourself doesn't’ require a total lifestyle overhaul, it can start small and then organically it will naturally become bigger. When you feel good you look good and when you look good you feel good.  Even small things can lift your mood, increase your energy, and make you feel like you’re back in the driver’s seat. Take things one step at a time, and as you make more positive lifestyle choices, you’you will soon notice a reduction in your stress levels, both at home and at work.  For example salt lamps are even kept on your desk at work too,Himalayan Salt Lamp: Glass Bowl Lamp with Salt Crystals Himalayan Salt Lamp: Glass Bowl Lamp with Salt Crystals. As Himalayan salt lamp warms up with the light bulb it emits negative ions into the air. This process may help relieve symptoms of Asthma, Sinusitis and common allergies, not to mention helps absorb co-workers negative energy.images-22 While energy can neither be created, nor destroyed, this unique process balances the energy within, resulting in a more definitive, more elevated and more centered sense of being. I like to use a mixture of methods to help ease the anxiety and bring out the best.

- Guided Meditation
- Intention Visualization
-  Hands on Reiki Re-balancing
- Chakra Clearing and alignment
- Crystal Energies in conjunction with
and the Figure "8" Detoxifies with aroma therapy increases your personal vibration and frequency. chakra energy

Each component of the practice, works together for the purpose of igniting the light within and restoring the balance, to enable ones full potentials. These methods improves your ability to manage stress and lead through the change and challenge that have become inevitable in the lives of leaders, families, kids, CEO, business leaders. People want to improved effectiveness as a leaders and reduce stress, parents want to be in the moment and enjoy their children. People also want to find alternative ways to connect and relax with co workers and their families. Cocktails after work are fine, but night after night as a way to relax is not healthy or productive.  Sometimes people just loose track because they are stressed and not staying in the moment. The high level of stress may be your new normal. That is what I see when dealing with business leaders of today. Some CEO's are so stressed they are not even taking time out to take care of the normal functions. Sleeping, eating right, sex, and family time, ( not necessarily in that order).
Meditation combined with Reiki, Chakra alignment, are sharpening  my clients focus  to help them preform the most important tasks and priorities, in both their professional and personal lives.
These methods can actually do more in less time then other methods by having treatments and practicing the method daily.crystal-cove-med-2
Relaxing is critical for clear and creative thinking, strong relationships and good health. Energy you spend away from work can enhance your productivity and your capacity to deal with things at work. Just imagine when your energy is flowing and you feel good, relaxed positive what u can accomplish. Positive thinking, good energy affects the people u work with as well as personal life. When I say time away from work I mean a mini mental break during the day can help you reduce your stress. One of the challenges I encounter is that people are so busy planning the next move they are missing the moment resulting in a feeling of emptiness, never completing a task.
With this method, companies are finding workers happier and less sick days. Kids that practice also have higher grades and less sick days too.  Its a wonderful feeling to be in balance and having everything aligned and feeling that the possibilities are endless of good energy and positive thoughts.
In NYC the energy of the city breeds creativity and new opportunities and when all of this is aligned the sky is the limit.

Safety Tips for Pokemon, Fun game but warning!

IMG_8364 IMG_8365

Fun game but  Warning!! This app may be used to lure children into secluded places the game is already linked to injuries, bad driving and opportunistic robberies.

Okay everyone is Pokemon crazy, after walking 5 miles around NYC, I was into it. But I could not help but  thinking about  Safety Tips for playing this game and understanding it!

-Kids are distracted, are far more open to talk to strangers who are playing the game, so make sure that you know where they are and don’t let them play solo, before they know it they are out of their comfort zone. The Pokeman makes it fun to explore and go to new places.

-Kids are ignoring "stranger danger", and falling for fake posts that are on instagram and snap chat in there neighborhoods.

-knowing where the Pokemon is and the predators wait

-eyes rare glued to screen bumping into people, loosing track of where they are

-going out and leaving the familiar area, walking further then they realize

The game could be manipulated by break ins to system

-the game can lure kids to water for “water species Pokemon”

-Also bring a charger with you when you play, batteries on phone get used very quickly

- Commissioner of NYC Bill Bratton, hates this game, due to the accidents and robberies that have been happening around NYC http://nypost.com/2016/07/14/nypd-commissioner-bill-bratton-hates-pokemon-go/

-Is something more sinister going on? Just think, tracking our moves, leading us to new places, and its only a matter of time before big business uses this for advertising at sporting events, dragging us to restaurants we never would have visited.  As a entrepreneur I think its not a fad, its a trend of more to come.

#Tuck Everlasting, entertaining and thought provoking for all ages! I would not want the fountain of youth, would you?

tuckeblstbanner-300x217The reviews for TUCK EVERLASTING are in, and the critics are split…it turn out to be magical Broadway shows. I personally loved it, theater to me is pure relaxation and fun.  Though there are moments of brilliance in the music by Chris Miller, lyrics by Nathan Tysen, and direction and choreography by Casey Nicholaw, the heavy-handed book offers more challenges than rewards. The plot is satisfyingly streamlined, for all audiences of all ages. The acting is commendable overall, but the highlight of the show is Terrence Mann as The Man in the Yellow Suit, portrayed as a delightful carnival barker.  The costumes were beautiful. The singing and dancing magical. I loved this play, it’s a reminder to enjoy every stage of your life and truly I would not want to live forever, nor should we, but go to relive one of your favorite childhood stories.

Parenting cell phones, tips and reminders!

Unknown-2images-16images-8Parents and cell phones! I hate to pass judgment, but here are some tips and reminders why we need to be mindful. Everyone is clearly overusing cell phones its not only kids that are over using parents are too. Remember kids model adult behavior, this is how they grow to be functioning adults. It makes me crazy when I see a child and adult dining and the parent is ignoring the child talking to a friends or texting. Children need interaction with parents they need to feel acknowledged and secure, which helps them in their social skills and future self-esteem it begins when a baby smiles, the parent smiles back and laughs, so does mom and dad this is called “mirroring.”

Parents over use of cell phones around kids, can cause emotional and physical dangers,  When a parent is ignoring there child and always on the phone I call it the“emotional freeze out”, the poor kids have to compete with a phone, this causes a lot of anxiety for kids and they are start seeking attention any way they can get it. Kids also misbehave when they know there parents are distracted.

I don’t want to shame parents but here are guidelines that we can all use, even when we are working and taking kids on a outing at the zoo.

1.   Do not use the phone at meal time, engage with your  family  Have a phone basket during dinner every ones phone goes in the basket until meal time is over

2.   When at events WATCH your children, be engaged in the event, put your phone on vibrate and tell your other family member friends what you are doing so they wont be calling or texting you at that time

3.   If you are mobile working, hold your Childs hand or have help watching them if you are returning messages

4.   If you have a call to answer keep it brief, and don’t get into long conversations

5.   Speak softly, respect surroundings

6.   Remember you don’t have to be in constant contact

7.Send out a auto response that “I'm unavailable , if its a emergency call this number

8.Dont be looking at your phone crossing street, driving, and at the movies with the bright light

 9. Show children by example, if I hear one more  stupid, waste of time conversation while standing on line, as the kids run around I'm going to say "excuse me, but…"

10. I also think that parents need to help each other out, if you have a important call to make during a outing I know most moms would have no problem keeping a eye on your child for a few minutes.

11. If you need to check your phone, acknowledge the people you are with and say excuse me, I have to check my phone.

Respect people, respect the surroundings, respect your children and most conversations and texting are just a distraction from dealing with real life.
ENGAGE and stay in the moment.http://www.marketwatch.com/story/parents-heres-the-no-1-reason-you-should-get-off-your-cellphones-2016-06-06

Earth Day: Green Chic Lifestyle!

WELCOME

My 2015 Beauty Finds

Happy Earth Day 2016! To celebrate such an important occasion, I have curated a special selection of mouth-watering items that will make your life easier and more environmentally-conscious. Who said that green couldn't be chic?

(Psst… Follow the pretty bold pink links to learn more about the products!)

1. Lavender aromatherapy candle by Lather ($10): This gorgeous candle is made exclusively with natural ingredients. Manufactured with paraffin-free and 100% natural soy wax, a spun cotton wick, lavender essential oil and lavender buds, this wonderful candle quickly scents the room with a soothing and calming fragrance. This is one of my personal favorite candles to pair with a relaxing bath or for burning after a stressful day, right before I go to bed.

2. Organic Manuka Honey Lozenges by Wedderspoon ($11.99): Want to bring some USDA Organic Certified goodness in your life? These eucalyptus lozenges are a life saver. Chock-full with manuka honey and bee propolis, they are great to soothe raspy throats without synthetic nasties. Since I discovered them, I always carry a few lozenges in my purse- with this crazy New York spring weather you never know what to expect!

3. Organic mini bath bombs by G2 Organics ($15): The perfect companion for the lavender aromatherapy candle, these small bombs are big in natural contents. One bath bomb is enough to draw a relaxing bath that also soothes and calms the skin (mine is extremely dry, and I have found these beauties also leave it hydrated. Yay!) The set of mini bath bombs includes six amazing scents: Amber, Passion fruit, Mango Cilantro, Aqua Blueberry, Pink Sugar and Fresh Apple (my personal favorite.)

4. Garden-in-a-can by Back to the Roots ($23.96/ 4-pack):  Do you have a green soul but lack the skills to keep your plants alive? Well, you've just found your soul mate: I sometimes believe I left my green hand back in Spain. This wonderful invention by Back To The Roots allows you to plant non-GMO/ USD organic-certified basil (shown in picture), cilantro, sage, and dill in the comfort of your own windowsill. As easy as opening the can, putting the seeds, and watering them, this cute kit allows makes it fun and easy to harvest your own organic herbs. With no chemicals and no messy drainage holes, this garden-in-a-can is the perfect companion for my wardrobe-sized apartment in Gotham, and makes it the ideal companion for families who want to initiate their kids in the wonders of healthy agriculture (and healthy eating!).

5. Pure Castile Rose Liquid Soap by Dr. Bronner ($10.99/ 16 oz.): This liquid soap boasts one of the cleanest vegetable oil-based formulas out there. Made with organic and certified fair-trade ingredients, Dr. Bronner's soap is created after the original formulas originating from the Castile region in Spain, with which I'm personally acquainted. Vegetable oil-based Castile soaps have been used in my country for centuries, and I'm really glad to report that Dr. Bronner's formula is very much what I expected.

This is a genuinely ecological and simple soap that can be used for almost anything: To clean your face, your body, or even your home – it's a great ally to wash food, do the dishes, get a sparkling laundry, mop your floors, or clean your pets– with no synthetic preservatives, detergents or foaming agents. This means no Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate, a common chemical detergent to which I am extremely allergic. I personally use Dr. Bronner's Pure Castile Liquid Soap to clean my kitchen and my bathroom; by mixing it with baking soda, it attacks the toughest grease stains. However, and because it is a very concentrated formula, you need to dilute it to get the best results. You can visit Dr. Bronner's blog here for suggestions on how to make the most of this wonderful product.

6. Hanging Air Plant Terrarium by Maker's Kit ($24, featured here with a black display stand from Amazon): This cute DIY green kit includes a hanging glass bubble, preserved moss and lichen, decorative rocks, a water atomizer, a Tillandsia plant, and an easy-to-follow set of instructions to take care of the lil' guy. You only need to provide a sunny spot for your new friend!
