What are you teaching your children about Memorial Day? Its more then just a day off!
“Memorial Day” means “Fun Three-Day Weekend.” It comes in late May, after all, when days are long and green, a preview of summer vacation to come. Indeed, for lots of families, the holiday kicks off a glorious season of barbecues, swimming, and other outdoor fun. We march in the parade with our dog, we even taught our dog to paw salute, when we pass a Veteran.
But the true meaning of Memorial Day goes much deeper than this. It is a somber day of remembrance for the men and women who have died for our country, and now’s a great time to start talking about it with your kids. The respect for our Military forces should be all year long, BUT this weekend is a perfect time to talk to your children about sacrifice and what it means to be a American. So when you are marching in parade or relaxing watching TV, take a few minutes and explain to your children what it means to be a American and respect for our armed forces. God Bless America!
